Privacy policy

Cinewright is designed to work on your devices. This policy covers the Cinewright apps (Cinewright Budgeting and Scheduling for Mac, CW Office for iPad, Cinewright Reader, and Cinewright for iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch) and this website, getcinewright.com.

In short

  • No account. The apps have no sign-in and no server of ours that your work passes through.
  • No tracking. The apps contain no analytics, no advertising and no tracking.
  • Your work stays with you. Scripts, schedules, budgets, photos and recordings are stored on your devices, or in places you choose, such as your own iCloud or a folder on a cloud service you use.
  • We see only what you send us, for example an email to support.
  • The website has no analytics. If you join the email list, MailerLite keeps your address for us, with your consent, and you can unsubscribe at any time.

“We” and “us” means Damon Winters, the maker of Cinewright.

The apps

What we collect

Nothing through the apps. We do not collect, store, sell or share personal information from them, and we cannot see your productions, scripts, budgets, photos, recordings or location.

What stays on your device

  • Everything you create is stored on your device, or in a file or folder you choose.
  • Script reading, breakdown, scheduling, budgeting, reports and checks are worked out on the device. Suggestions from Apple Intelligence, text recognition of scanned pages and speech recognition run on the device; your script and words are not sent anywhere. The on-device intelligence features (suggestions, sketches, Ask Your Production and the First-Pass Budget) are off until you turn them on in Settings; questions and answers are not kept after the panel closes, and private records such as contacts, addresses, health details and pay are never read.
  • Automatic safety copies stay on the device. On iPhone and iPad they are left out of the device’s iCloud backup.
  • Signing and encryption keys are kept in the device’s keychain.
  • On Mac, private details of people in the Directory are off by default and, when kept, are sealed with a key in the Mac’s keychain.
  • The free Cinewright Reader for Mac has no network access at all.

Permissions

The apps ask for permissions only for the features that need them, such as the camera (viewfinder, meters, scans), location (sun and moon positions, location tags), the microphone (timecode, voice notes, intercom), speech recognition, photos, the local network and Bluetooth (devices on set and camera remotes), notifications, and adding your calls to Calendar. What these features capture stays on your device unless you share it. You can change any permission in your device’s Settings.

Optional online features

The apps work offline. A few features use the internet, only when you use them, and send only what is needed:

  • Weather forecast (Mac and iPad): when you ask for a forecast, or turn on auto-refresh for a production, the coordinates of that day’s locations and the dates go to Apple Weather. No title, scene, name or anything else about the production is sent.
  • Apple Maps lookups: finding a place’s coordinates and time zone, the nearest hospital, a scout’s street address, or offline maps for sun planning sends the address or coordinates involved to Apple. You can type addresses or coordinates by hand instead.
  • iCloud, if you choose: on iPhone and iPad, your projects can sync between your own devices through your private iCloud database. Apple operates it under Apple’s privacy policy, and we have no access to it. You can turn it off in the app or in your device’s Settings.
  • Shared folders, if you choose: a production folder in iCloud Drive, Dropbox, Google Drive, OneDrive or another service is uploaded by that service’s own app. The office can seal the folder so its files are encrypted before they reach the service.
  • Shared shows on iPhone and iPad: if you share a show by link, or keep crew copies current through iCloud, the copies are encrypted with the show’s key, which travels only in the link you send.
  • Library updates: the iPhone and iPad app reads small public records from Apple’s iCloud, such as new cameras and lenses for the library. Nothing about you is sent.
  • Licence list (Mac): where it applies, the Mac app may download a public list of cancelled licence numbers about once a week while online. Nothing about you or your productions is sent with it.
  • Email and messages you send: when you send a call sheet, a Reader copy, comments or a report, the app opens your own mail app or Messages and you press Send.

Apple’s services are covered by Apple’s privacy policy, and other cloud and mail services by their own.

On set, between devices

  • The crew show, video village, intercom and live progress go directly between your devices on the local network or peer-to-peer Wi-Fi, not over the internet. They are encrypted, and a device needs the right code to connect.
  • Nearby devices see only a random tag for a show and the label you chose for your device, never the production’s title or your phone’s name.
  • The Apple Watch slate remote exchanges only slate details (scene, take, roll, camera letter and timecode) and button presses with your own paired iPhone.
  • Phone numbers and other private records stay in the office unless the office chooses to share them.

Support emails

Report a Problem and Suggest a Feature open an email in your own mail app. You see everything in it first, including any optional device details or support report, which leave out names, phone numbers, places and production titles. A crash note is shown to you in full and goes only if you send it. Nothing is sent unless you press Send.

When you email us, we receive your email address and what you write, and use them only to answer you. We keep support emails in our mailbox, hosted by Zoho, for as long as needed to help you, and you can ask us to delete them.

Purchases

Purchases in the App Store are processed by Apple; we receive no payment details or personal details from Apple. If Mac licences are also sold directly, a payment provider will handle the payment under its own privacy policy, and this policy will name it before those sales open.

This website

  • No analytics, no advertising. This site has no tracking scripts and sets no cookies of its own.
  • Hosting: the site is hosted by Cloudflare. Like any web host, Cloudflare processes the technical details of each visit (such as your IP address, browser type and the page requested) to deliver the site and protect it from abuse, and may keep basic server logs for a short time. Cloudflare may set a strictly necessary security cookie.
  • The “Keep me posted” list: if you sign up, your email address goes to MailerLite, the service that keeps the list and sends the emails for us. You confirm by email before you are added (double opt-in). MailerLite also records when and how you signed up and confirmed, as a record of your consent. Like most email services, MailerLite can record whether an email is opened and which links are clicked.
  • What we send: feature previews, the Kickstarter launch and the release date. We don’t sell or share the list. Every email has an unsubscribe link, or you can write to us and we’ll remove you.
  • The sign-up form is loaded from MailerLite’s servers, which receive the technical details of your visit when the form loads.

Your choices and rights

Because the apps keep your work on your devices, you control it directly: you can export it, share it or delete it at any time. For anything we hold, such as an email to support or your place on the email list, you can ask us what we have, ask us to correct it, or ask us to delete it, by writing to support@getcinewright.com. Depending on where you live, you may have further rights under local law, and we will honour them.

Children

Cinewright is a professional tool and is not directed at children. We do not knowingly collect information from children.

Changes and contact

If this policy changes, the updated version will be published on this page, and in the apps where they include it, with a new effective date.
