What is in the template

  • The location: Name, address, contact, scout date and who scouted it, the scenes and shoot days it is for.
  • Practicalities: Access and hours, crew and truck parking, power, sound issues, sun path with sunrise and sunset, permits, fees, restrooms, mobile signal and hazards.
  • Nearest hospital: Name, address, phone and drive time, ready to copy onto the call sheet.
  • Photos and sketch: Six numbered photo boxes with captions and an overhead sketch for north, entrances, power and parking.

How to use it

  1. Scout at the shoot hour. Visit when you will shoot if you can, to hear the sound and see the light as they will be.
  2. Fill in the front. Contact, access, parking, power, sound, sun path, permits and the nearest hospital.
  3. Photograph and sketch. Number each photo and note which way it faces; sketch north, the entrances, power and parking.
  4. Close the checklist. Tick each item as it is settled; the workbook shows what is still to do.

Questions

Is the location scout report free?

Yes. Every file downloads from this page with no account and no email address.

What should a location scout report include?

At least the address and contact, access, parking, power, sound problems, the sun's path, permits, restrooms and the nearest hospital, with photos. This template has room for all of them.

Why note sunrise and sunset on the scout day?

The light changes through the season. Writing the scout day's times next to the shoot days' times shows how far the light will move.

Does the Excel version work in Google Sheets?

Yes. The checklist count and the photo log keep working in Google Sheets.

Does it work in Apple Numbers?

Yes. Download the Numbers file; the totals and drop-down lists keep working on Mac, iPad and iPhone.
