What is in the template
- Grid sheet: A squared overhead grid with lettered and numbered references, a heavy line every four squares, and space for scale and north.
- Symbol key: Camera with its lens direction, light with its throw, practical, flag, dolly track, actor with facing, set wall, door and swing, window, furniture, power, cable and video village.
- Marks list: A second page lists every mark by label, kind, setup and grid reference, with the equipment and notes.
- Sample: The farmhouse kitchen of the sample production at night: three camera positions, a dolly move, moonlight through a tented window and the power run.
How to use it
- Draw the set. Start with the walls, then doors, windows and the main furniture, to the scale you choose.
- Place the actors. Mark each actor with initials and the way they face, and their moves.
- Place cameras and lights. Mark each camera with its letter and setup, and each light with its size and throw. Add flags, track and the power run.
- List the marks. On the second page, list every mark with its grid reference so the plan reads without a key.
Questions
Is the floor plan template free?
Yes. Download it from this page with no account and no email address.
What scale should I use?
Whatever fits the set on the sheet: one square for a foot suits most rooms; one square for a metre or a yard suits exteriors. Write it in the scale box.
Can I use it for a lighting plot?
Yes. The light symbol shows the throw; write the unit, gel and stand next to each one, and list them on the marks page.
Does the Excel version work in Google Sheets?
Yes. The grid tab, the marks list and the counts by kind all open in Google Sheets.
Does it work in Apple Numbers?
Yes. Download the Numbers file; the totals and drop-down lists keep working on Mac, iPad and iPhone.
