What is in the template
- Continuity report: Scene, set, story day, script pages and timing; continuity items by cast, props, wardrobe, makeup and hair, vehicles, effects and other; setups with size, lens, movement and screen direction; every take with status, timecode, rolls and notes.
- Script supervisor's daily report: The production-time log (crew call, lunch, second meal, camera wrap, company move), totals for previous, today, total to date, remaining and script, scenes credited, wild tracks and room tone, owed shots, weather and notes.
- Editor's log: Each take in shooting order with circled takes in brackets, timecode in and out, length, camera and sound rolls, lens, shot description and notes for the cutting room.
- Lined script key and facing page: How the coverage lines read: on and off camera, dirty, tucked inserts, setup ends and carry-overs, one line per camera, with the shot-size, movement and take-status codes. A blank facing page follows.
How to use it
- Pick the format. Print the PDF for a pencil-and-clipboard day, use the fillable PDF on a laptop or tablet, or keep the Excel workbook if editorial wants a spreadsheet.
- One continuity report per scene. Fill in the scene header, tick each continuity item when it matches, and log every take with its status and timecode. Add a sheet when the takes run over.
- Close the day. On the daily report, enter yesterday's totals and the scenes credited today. In the workbook, today's pages, time and running totals add up for you.
- Send editorial the log. Fill in the editor's log as you go, circle the selects, and send it with the camera and sound reports at wrap.
Questions
Is the continuity report template really free?
Yes. Download any file straight from this page: no account, no email address and no sign-up. Use it on any production, paid or unpaid.
What is the difference between a continuity report and a daily report?
The continuity report covers one scene: what has to match from shot to shot and every take of it. The daily report covers the whole shoot day: times, the scenes completed, pages and screen time, and the running totals production tracks.
Will the Excel version work in Google Sheets?
Yes. Upload the .xlsx to Google Drive and open it with Google Sheets. The take lengths, page counts in eighths and the daily totals keep working.
Does it work in Apple Numbers?
Yes. Download the Numbers file; the totals and drop-down lists keep working on Mac, iPad and iPhone.
How do I write page counts in eighths?
A script page is counted in eighths: 2 3/8 means two pages and three eighths. In the workbook you type whole eighths (2 3/8 is 19) and the page count is shown for you.
Can I use the template with Cinewright?
The templates stand on their own. Cinewright Continuity for Mac and Cinewright for iPhone and iPad make these reports from the lined script and the take log, but neither is on sale yet: they launch through Kickstarter.
Script supervising in Cinewright
Cinewright Continuity, a Mac app for script supervisors, lines the script, logs the takes and makes the daily progress report, editor's log, facing pages and editorial exports from them. The same script supervising is part of Cinewright for iPhone and iPad. Neither is on sale yet; they launch through Kickstarter. Windows and Android versions are in development.
